Flexible is questioning the modernity’s mass production by reimagining the pre-industrial furniture crafting ethic, focusing on the Swedish folklore period known as Allmoge.
Today, a cabinet is often just another commodity, replaceable and mass-produced, distanced from its original creator despite still carrying a sense of identity. Our relationship with furniture today contrasts with how people interacted with it in pre-industrial times.
Background: During the folklore period, the traditional cupboard was more than just a practical storage piece, it held symbolic value. Farmhands often had their own cupboards for personal belongings, representing their space and identity within the local community.
Inspired by the traditional cupboard, my goal was to create a flexible cabinet suited to modern living and working conditions.
The hinges are inspired by the folkloric tulip that was often painted on furniture.
